Facials are pretty much skin savers. They slow down the aging process, clear out your skin and unclog your pores. What can I say? I really do love them. But to be fair they can be quite pricey, and I don’t have the time or the money to get one professionally done every week. So I went to three different experts, got my facials done, took note and then invested a pretty good time researching and reading. Now I present to you how to get the best facial right from your home.

Deep Cleanse

The first and the most important thing is to start off with a squeaky clean face. Spen around 4 minutes cleansing your face using a mild facial cleanser. For a bonus, you can use your Clarisonic or whatever device you use to cleanse your face for an extra deep cleanse. If you are using your hands make sure you use circular motions and spend around a minute on each corner of your face. If you are using a Clarisonic or spinner brush, cut those in half, in other words, spend around 30 seconds on each corner of your face. Make sure you use a gentle face wash, and you don’t scrub too hard.

Scrub Off

The key to getting soft skin is ensuring that the dead skin cells are exfoliated off. Grabbing gentle exfoliant, and using your fingers spread the exfoliant all over your face and start gently scrubbing away the dead cells. It is extremely important to be as gentle as you can be, especially if you are using a physical exfoliant, you really don’t want to irritate your skin, it beats the purpose. PROTIP: Apply your physical exfoliant while your face is wet, this will make spreading the exfoliant around easier, and causes less redness. QUICK DIY:  If you don’t want to invest in an exfoliant you can create one on your own. By mixing 1 and a half tablespoon of ground coffee beans, a tablespoon of water, and half a tablespoon of coconut oil. 

Steam Away

After scrubbing and washing your faces properly, it is then time for my personal favorite part of a facial, steam. Just the warmth of the steam opening up your pores and allowing your skin to finally breath makes me all Iggy inside! You really don’t need any fancy equipment, I had so many estheticians tell me that boiling a hot water in a pot will do just the thing. All you need is a pot, water, and a towel. Allow the water to sit on the stove in a pot till it’s boiling. Then proceed to take the pot off the stove, with a towel in hand put your face inches away and over the pot (NOT IN IT), and then grab your towel, cover your head and trap the heat coming out of the water. Allow the heat to seep into your skin and open up your pores for around 2 minutes. And there you have it, your own fancy steamer. DISCLAIMER: Please be extremely careful when doing this step, make sure you don’t have kids running around you, or anyone to startle you because the boiling water can cause damage. PROTIP: Make it more therapeutic by adding some essential oils in the water or chamomile tea bag, and make it an aromatherapy.

Mask On

Moving on to one of the most crucial steps of a facial, the mask. I personally like to multi-mask when I do a facial because this is what my esthetician does for me. But the second mask is totally optional, the first is crucial! Now that you’ve opened up your pores Apply a trusted and tested clay mask, and let it sit on your skin for around 12 minutes and clear up your pores. After 12 minutes wash your face and apply a sheet mask (preferably a hydrating one since the clay mask does strip off the natural oils). Let the sheet mask sit for about 20 minutes, and go around your house and do some errands.

The Extras

After you remove your mask, it’s time to lock everything in using a good serum. Using something that your skin is used to is key with facials because you don’t want your skin to flare up. You can massage some rosehip oil, argan oil or just a good old facial serum into your skin. Apply your eye cream and relax. Now your skin is relaxed, set and ready to go.
